Stephen Harper playing the Yellow GuitarThe Gazette has an article featuring explicit instructions on how to commit political suicide in Quebec, courtesy of Stephen Harper. It’s good to know that he’s essentially ensuring that the Conservative Party is going to find it quite hard to win an election anytime soon.

Conservatives in Canada : I have some advice for you. Ditch Harper. Ditch your moral conservative issues. Then you might actually be a credible political party again.

The Globe and Mail is reporting Transport Canada is no longer investigating Gurmant Grewal over allegations that he had given a flight’s passenger a tape to carry to Ottawa for him. One of the tapes was part of the infamous ‘vote buying’ expose that went wrong for him.

It is illegal to place a package on an airplane on which you are not travelling in Canada.

You can bet this guy is dreading the next election. Given that ONE of the tapes was that in the news lately, I wonder what else he’s been taping?

The Montreal Gazette (One of my favorite papers :) ) has an article on the recent developments in the Maher Arar saga.

Apparently the US offered to send Arar back to Canada ONLY if Canada would imprison him immediately upon arrival. Canada refused, claiming:

We have a Charter of Rights … we don’t have cause to arrest and press charges and put him in jail.

So the US sent him to Jordan and he was driven to Syria, his birthplace where he was imprisoned and tortured.

Bill Graham, the Foreign Affairs minister at the time has recently apologized about his conduct in the situation and indicated that things could have been “better handled”.

This is still one of the stories that I cannot believe happened. More to come.

Talk Radio 580 CFRA has posted an article claiming that a leading Canadian audio expert has suspicions that the tapes played to the media were doctored in some way.

Stevan Pausak, an expert who testifies at criminal trials and has worked for the provincial government, examined about 46 seconds of Grewal’s recorded conversation with Health Minister Ujjal Dosanjh. Pausak, along with another expert, says it appears a portion of the recording was cut out.

Tories are explaining this as a glitch from when the audio was put to CD. What a mess this whole situation is.
