The Montreal Gazette (One of my favorite papers :) ) has an article on the recent developments in the Maher Arar saga.

Apparently the US offered to send Arar back to Canada ONLY if Canada would imprison him immediately upon arrival. Canada refused, claiming:

We have a Charter of Rights … we don’t have cause to arrest and press charges and put him in jail.

So the US sent him to Jordan and he was driven to Syria, his birthplace where he was imprisoned and tortured.

Bill Graham, the Foreign Affairs minister at the time has recently apologized about his conduct in the situation and indicated that things could have been “better handled”.

This is still one of the stories that I cannot believe happened. More to come.

Talk Radio 580 CFRA has posted an article claiming that a leading Canadian audio expert has suspicions that the tapes played to the media were doctored in some way.

Stevan Pausak, an expert who testifies at criminal trials and has worked for the provincial government, examined about 46 seconds of Grewal’s recorded conversation with Health Minister Ujjal Dosanjh. Pausak, along with another expert, says it appears a portion of the recording was cut out.

Tories are explaining this as a glitch from when the audio was put to CD. What a mess this whole situation is.

Did up this Maple sheet about hitting a streak of pairing the board. As you can see past 2-3 hands it gets pretty unlikely.

Not sure what I’ll do next. Just a quick comp for this morning.

Calculate the Possible Number of Total 7 card hands

>    binomial(52,7);

133784560

Calculate the possible number of boards with you holding 2 cards.

>    binomial(50,5);

2118760

Calculate the possible number of FLOPS with you holding 2 cards

>    binomial(50,3);

19600

Calculate the number of flops you will not hit at least a pair holding 2 different cards on the flop

>    binomial(44,3);

13244

From this, calculate the fraction of flops where you WILL hit a pair

>    (19600-13244)/19600;

227/700

Turn this into a decimal

>    fractnopair:=evalf((227/700));

fractnopair := .3242857143

Now find the likelyhood of holding consecutive flop-pairing hands.

>    for i from 1 by 1 to 30 do percentagearray[i]:=fractnopair^i end do:
>    with (plots):
>    listplot ([seq(percentagearray[k],k=1..30)]);

The National Post had a story a few hours ago about the Liberals claiming the Grewal tapes were doctored. It’s offline now due to ‘copyright’ reasons. This is the snippit I got:

OTTAWA — The Liberals claim that tapes of conversations with a British Columbia Tory were doctored, with phrases deleted and words from one conversation spliced into another to create false meanings. The …

Mabye they’ll put it back online so we can all have a read.
